At the recent annual conference on Wood Processing and Manufacturing, New Zealand Forestry Minister Peeni Henare announced the creation of a $57 million fund to invest in products such as sawn timber and engineered wood in partnership with wood processors to promote domestic wood processing. From July, the annual Wood Processing Growth Fund will also provide around $3 million for research, business cases, pilot studies and market development for local wood processing projects in New Zealand.v

However, with the slowdown in Chinese market demand, the drawbacks of New Zealand's log export trade have gradually emerged.

According to timber traders, the export price of New Zealand logs needs to remain above NZ $120 to be profitable, and in March-April this year, the price of New Zealand A-grade logs fell to NZ $112 to NZ $115.
